Upcycle your thriftstore finds with Kintsugi

There is beauty in imperfection. Kintsugi carries this philosophy too. Repairing broken ceramics with gold or silver lacquer or liners shows us that traces of breakage can contribute to the beauty of an object. You can show the beauty of breakage too, by following this step-by-step plan!

What is kintsugi?

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery or other items by mending the cracks with golden, silver or platinum lacquer. It treats the breakage as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise, and we think that is beautiful!

First sentence paragraph

Step 1

Some thrift store finds have cracks, have been repaired or are still perfect. You can choose for yourself with which kind of thrift store or kitchen finds you want to work. It isn’t necessary to break anything on purpose in order for you to glue it back together. You can find plates and bowls that already have cracks in them, or you can draw a cracked pattern yourself.

Create lines with Effect liners

Step 2

Use Effect liners in gold or different colours. Follow the cracks or make your own cracked pattern.

Add Metallic paint

Step 3

You can also choose Metallic paint to color in broken parts or add other effects.

Let dry for 30 minutes

Step 4

Let everything dry at least 30 minutes. Now your kintsugi decorations are ready. Enjoy!
