A watercolour is usually framed behind glass and does not then need to be varnished. The glass protects the watercolour from dirt and, in part, from possible harmful effects of light on the colours. However, in case a watercolour serves an illustrative purpose, for example, and has to go from hand to hand during a discussion, the watercolour may be damaged by moisture or dirt. In this case it is better to varnish the watercolour. Talens Watercolour varnish matt 050 is invisible after drying and makes the water colour water-resistant. The paint is now protected against moisture, dirt can possibly be removed. The varnish can also be used for watercolour pencils.
In principle, watercolour pencils can be worked on any type of paper, although the best results will be achieved on watercolour paper. Watercolour paper has a special surface glue which means that when the colours are washed, the pigment is not absorbed by the paper. The colours remain pure. Moreover, the gluing prevents the paper from bulging too much when using a lot of water.
